Scarpino’s Classes

"Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world." Paulo Freire

The Laughing Heartimg_8309

your life is your life
don't let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can't beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
Charles Bukowski

Pre-Algebra and Algebra

Linear equations art project: Students learned about graphing linear equations through this art piece. Each student had a small section of the art piece on which they had to graph a set of equations correctly to match the lines on other students' sections. Then they used a variety of paper mediums to fill the spaces between lines.

I teach math from a language and art perspective. I think anyone can learn to love math if they are able to see the big concepts of nature that it describes before they are asked to manipulate numbers.

As the culmination of a project about Trimet's new Orange Line, the pre-algebra class took a field trip (on Trimet) which they planned using the pre-algebra proficiencies.
